Jenkins core upgrade 2.444 to 2.516.1 what are the challenges? does it make any impact on prod?

Jenkins setup:

I have a Jenkins which we use in prod. Due to unallocated resources its upgrade pending from 2 year.

so now we had planned to upgrade from 2.444 to 2.516.1

Questions

  1. What are the precautions we need to take care?
  2. What are the challenges?
  3. Does it supports by Jenkins?
  4. What are the best practices to perform?
  5. I didn’t upgraded plugins as well? what is the sequence? upgrade plugins first then go for Jenkins core upgrade?

For such a mayor upgrade:

  • take a backup
  • upgrade plugins
  • Read all intermediate release notes ( there is a t least one step where authentication plugins and jenkins update needs to get synced)
  • possibly update to intermediate versions and upgrade plugins on each step.
