Harshit Neog - Introducing myself to the Jenkins ecosystem for GSoC 2027

Hi everyone,

I am Harshit (@Laggy-Ryon on GitHub), and I am preparing to contribute to Jenkins for the upcoming GSoC cycle. My technical background is centered around Java and systems tooling.

Rather than waiting for the official organization announcement next year, I wanted to spend this fall getting comfortable with Jenkins internals, build toolchains, and contributor expectations by working on practical issues.

I recently focused on plugin-installation-manager-tool, which is critical for Docker images and containerized Jenkins controllers. I picked Issue #641 because it addressed a subtle but painful operational bug: when a user passes an explicit custom WAR path via --war or -w that does not exist, the CLI previously logged a warning, fell back silently, and exited with status 0. In automated Docker builds and CI pipelines, this allowed broken container configurations to proceed rather than failing fast.

When working through the fix, the main consideration was separating intended fallback behavior from explicit user error:

  • When no WAR argument is supplied, the tool should continue falling back gracefully to OS defaults for offline or generic downloads.
  • When a user explicitly specifies a path (including handling both standard filesystem paths and file: URIs), a missing file should throw a PluginInputException and trigger a non-zero exit code, matching the behavior of --plugin-file.
  • Cleaning up unhandled manifest lookup attempts so non-existent defaults do not unnecessarily dump stack traces to stderr.

I opened Pull Request #970 covering the validation, documentation updates, and regression test cases in CliOptionsTest: Throw error when user-specified Jenkins war file does not exist (fixes #641) by Laggy-Ryon · Pull Request #970 · jenkinsci/plugin-installation-manager-tool · GitHub

All automated test suites, SpotBugs, and Checkstyle checks are green.

While that PR is under review, I plan to continue working through adjacent issues in the plugin management tool and start exploring plugin modernization and Jenkins core components.

If anyone has feedback on the approach taken in #970 or suggestions on related areas of the developer tooling ecosystem worth investigating next, I would appreciate your thoughts.

Looking forward to collaborating with the community.

Quick update on my first contribution: PR #970 for plugin-installation-manager-tool was merged. It makes the CLI fail with a clear error and a non-zero exit code when a user-specified --war file does not exist (issue #641), so CI and Docker builds no longer continue silently in that case.

Thank you to timja for the quick review and for merging it.

Next, I am planning to work on issue #562, improving the error message when a requested plugin is not found, so the tool fails fast with a concise message instead of long retry output. I will comment on the issue before starting.

If anyone has pointers on where else the plugin manager would benefit from help, or on GSoC project ideas in this area, I would appreciate hearing them.

Quick update on my recent contributions to the plugin-installation-manager-tool:

  • PR #970 (Merged): Added validation and explicit error handling when a user-specified Jenkins WAR file does not exist (fixes #641).
  • PR #972 (Merged): Streamlined plugin download failure handling by fast-failing on HTTP 404 responses without redundant mirror retries, and surfacing concise error messages for missing plugins (fixes #562).

Thanks to @timja for the review feedback on both PRs. I am currently looking into issue #865 as my next step.
