[GSoC 2026 Contribution] OpenTelemetry for Jenkins Jobs

Good Day, I’m interested in the project idea for implementing OpenTelemetry with Jenkins.
Please I would like some clarification on some things

• I see that there is already a plugin that serves a similar purpose
• It was not mentioned in the idea, so is it meant to extend the plugin; or
• Is it meant be a separate project, which would be something like creating an instrumentation library, similar to the ones listed here: opentelemetry-java-instrumentation/docs/supported-libraries.md at e76909ecc2afbfdc7c323625112cd0cec6373b0c · open-telemetry/opentelemetry-java-instrumentation · GitHub ?
• In the case of either of the 2 above holding true, is the goal to emit signals that conform to the semantic conventions for CI/CD and VCS as listed here: Semantic conventions for CICD | OpenTelemetry ?
• If none of the above hold true, please I would like to discuss further

Hi @DavidGrath to the best of my knowledge the project has not that much to do with the existing plugin, and will be organised as a separate project. Actually the original title of the project already provided some more context: Use OpenTelemetry for Jenkins Jobs on ci.jenkins.io
where the ci.jenkins.io is one of the Infra services used for the Jenkins project.

Maybe the project lead mentors Shivay Lamba (who is on Gitter) and Chamod Perera can shed some more light on your other questions.
