# Startup failed - status=217/USER

New install on rhel8 and trying to start up jenkins after enabling it and the following error is produced.  
_Job for jenkins.service failed because the control process exited with error code._

sudo journalctl -u jenkins  
_Jun 22 11:05:53 myservername systemd[1]: Failed to start Jenkins Continuous Integration Server._  
_Jun 22 11:05:53 myservername systemd[1]: jenkins.service: Service RestartSec=100ms expired, scheduling restart._  
_Jun 22 11:05:53 myservername systemd[1]: jenkins.service: Scheduled restart job, restart counter is at 4._  
_Jun 22 11:05:53 myservername systemd[1]: Stopped Jenkins Continuous Integration Server._  
_Jun 22 11:05:53 myservername systemd[1]: Starting Jenkins Continuous Integration Server…_  
_Jun 22 11:05:53 myservername systemd[1]: jenkins.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=217/USER_  
_Jun 22 11:05:53 myservername systemd[1]: jenkins.service: Failed with result ‘exit-code’._

I followed the instructions on [Redhat Jenkins Packages](https://pkg.jenkins.io/redhat-stable/). Any suggestions as to what causes this?

Java 11 is installed.  
$ java -version  
openjdk version “11.0.19” 2023-04-18 LTS  
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (Red\_Hat-11.0.19.0.7-2) (build 11.0.19+7-LTS)  
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (Red\_Hat-11.0.19.0.7-2) (build 11.0.19+7-LTS, mixed mode, sharing)
