# Internal Error connecting GitHub to Jenkins - form field validation (HTTP 500)

I am a brand new Jenkins user. Really new, so please don’t assume I know the obvious.

I am attempting to connect my GitHub instance to Jenkins. I understand I need to use SSH. I have successfully generated a new key pair. Each time I try to authenticate, I get a message that says:  
“An internal error occurred during form field validation (HTTP 500). Please reload the page and if the problem persists, ask the administrator for help.”

I have tried this 20 different times and I do not know what to change.I have included a youtube link to my video showing my steps. Please help! Thank you in advance.

HTTP response code 500 is an internal server error. The most frequent place where I’ve seen that is when a misconfigured reverse proxy sits between the user and Jenkins controller. You don’t mention a reverse proxy, but if one is involved, you should review the [reverse proxy configuration instructions](https://www.jenkins.io/doc/book/system-administration/reverse-proxy-configuration-with-jenkins/index.html) to assure that you’ve configured it correctly.

Hi @MarkEWaite . Thank you very much for responding. I don’t have any proxies or anything of that sort. I simply installed Jenkins on my local box. Again, I’m new and don’t know much of the sort. Let me know if there are other suggestions. Looks like we’ve had a few views on the topic. Thanks again!

Check the Jenkins log on the controller to see if there is more information provided in the log.

Log messages at a level more verbose than INFO (i.e., CONFIG, FINE, FINER, FINEST) are never recorded in the Jenkins log. Use log recorders to record these log messages.

The Jenkins controller process where that command is being run does not have `ssh` in the path. Command line git requires `ssh` in order to access repositories with the `ssh` protocol.
