Just a question as Im interested. Has it always been `MIT` or has it been some more restrictive license?

The license section of the governance page

> **[Project Governance Document](https://www.jenkins.io/project/governance/#license)**
>
> Jenkins – an open source automation server which enables developers around the world to reliably build, test, and deploy their software

says:

> The Jenkins project uses the [MIT License](https://opensource.org/licenses/MIT) as the primary license of choice, for the code that we develop. Unless otherwise stated, all the code is under the MIT license.
>
> The [core of Jenkins](https://github.com/jenkinsci/jenkins) is entirely under the MIT license, as is the majority of our [infrastructure code](https://github.com/jenkins-infra) (that runs the project itself), as well as many plugins.

I’m not aware of a time when it was under a more restrictive license. The license file committed in 2008 declares the copyright beginning in 2004 and lists it as MIT licensed.
